In the future the hope is to expand the WEPP monitoring network to other parts of the state. A minimum 100-foot buffer is recommended between ponds and any activities that can alter water quality or produce sediment. Information that you collect will allow WEPP Coordinators to better identify and understand this important wetland habitat type in southeast Wisconsin.
WEPP began monitoring selected ephemeral ponds to characterize the variety of types, their ecological significance, and to develop guidelines for protection and restoration. In 2006, as part of the Wisconsin Ephemeral Ponds Project (WEPP), the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission began intensive mapping to update the digital Wisconsin Wetland Inventory in southeast Wisconsin. Data collected through the Wisconsin Ephemeral Ponds Project a project focused on utilizing citizen monitors to identify ephemeral ponds primarily in south-east Wisconsin counties.

The objective of the project is to collect data that will lead to a better understanding of the location and ecology of Wisconsin’s ephemeral pond habitats. Many Milwaukee County Parks feature splash pads, which are free to use and generally open from 11 a.m. Ephemeral ponds are ponds that are present only a portion of the year, drying up later in the summer but available as habitat for a variety of amphibians, macroinvertebrates, and wildlife during spring and early summer.
